The Kite Runner

My sister had been on my case to watch the movie "The Kite Runner" for weeks. Usually when someone so highly recommends a movie to me I will be sure to watch it right away, but it took me awhile to get around to this one.

What an incredible story!

It is a story of friendship, fear, betrayal, risk, redemption and love. One of my favorite lines in the movie is when Rahim (family friend) says to Baba (Amir's father) as he is explaining his frustration that his son is not developing a tough enough character.

He says, "children aren't coloring books, you don't get to fill them with your favorite colors".

It made me think about how, at times, I wish that my own children would develop into the people I would like them to be. While I believe there is a definite influence we have on our children, we clearly do not get to determine who or what they become.

As a parent I need to mentor, train, encourage and love my children... to "bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4).

But, at some point, they need their own canvass on which to paint.

Flying A Kite Is Good For The Soul

We just returned from a spontaneous two-day trip to the Nags Head area of the Outer Banks to wrap up Ben & Alex's spring break. It was a great time with family and friends (Drew & Leah joined us).

Here is Miyah flying a kite for the first time...
